A Sigh of Relief and a Growl of Frustration

I have been so worried the last few days. The other day I realized that I didn't turn in my graduation application for school. I have a pretty active imagination so after an hour of worrying I had convinced myself that I was going to be kicked out of UCSC and I would end up homeless on the street begging for food. In the end it didn't matter that it was late, she basically said the deadline was a formality and she has never in 25 years enforced it. Ahhh a breath of relief....

However, a hour later, my stomach was in knots again. I had an essay test on A Portrait of a Lady in my English Lit class today and I have never felt so unprepared for a test! I think I ended up worrying myself silly again. I kept telling myself that this test is not going to matter in 1 year, 5 years, or 10 years. It would be okay. Oh course, I was right, I was unprepared for the test but not like I thought I would be. I am not going to fail and I might even get a good grade on this one. I am aiming for an A on the next though. Next on the reading list it Women in Love by D.H Lawrence. I hear that it has some racy sex scenes in it so maybe it will be a more exciting read then Portrait.

I had my first two sales in my shop today! Thanks go to Maya Jean and Tiny Sprouts. Thanks so much for your support!

Finally the bad part of my day. As I was sewing a new pouch (black with white polka dots and a red lining and zipper, super cute!) the needle hit the metal end of the zipper and I don't know what happened but its not sewing properly now. I hope it is something minor. I have to finish my moms mothers day present and I have lots of new bags cut and ready to sew! I was planning on a day of sewing tomorrow. Ah well, I have to clean the house anyway.

Fun in the Sun

On this beautiful May Day it was finally warm enough to break out the new pool at the neighbors. My little pumpkin had such a grand time. I took so much pleasure while sitting in the sun. I cant wait until I am on a beach every weekend watching her running from the waves and learning to catch sandcrabs.

I have been sewing a bit. I bought Amy Butler's In Stitches book and I really like it. The patterns seem simple to do. I have read through several, but so far I have only finished one.

These are the drawstring bags from the book. They still need the drawstrings and I am going to take pics of them in action. The pirate one is for my brother Sean. He is completely obsessed with Pirates of the Caribbean and has been for over a year or maybe two! The other bag it probably going to stay with me unless a friend decides she has to have it.

These bags also seem to be reversible. Which is why I put some cool liners in the pirate one.

The only thing that I would say about this pattern is that it is a little confusing at first (at least for me), but after I read it over a few times and laid the pieces out it was much clearer. This is an ingenious way to make a bag but it reminds me of when I made my first lined tote. I couldn't figure out how I would pull the whole purse out that hole in the liner and it would look right. I tried it and it worked! This is the same thing. It doesn't seem right at first but it comes out great. I popped both these bags out in an afternoon and I have plans for more!

Afternoon Tea- Photo Friday

Some afternoons I want to take a quiet break and sit with a good book and a cup of tea. I did 9 loads of laundry by the time I took this break so it was well worth it.

My Photography

I have been thinking a lot about photography lately. I think my new camera is the best purchase I have made in years. I have already gotten so much pleasure out of it. Most of the pictures I have been taking have been of my family and my home. I haven't had a camera in so long I felt like I have missed documenting our lives for the past 4 years.

I think I got that out of my system. I am starting to think like a photographer again. I am itching to go out and find a great shot.

I have also been a little more artsy then I used to be.

I ran out of batteries this afternoon or I would be taking pics right now. I probably should be reading Portrait of a Lady by Henry James instead. I have to read it for my English Lit class. After reading Madame Bovary I am hoping for a different writing style from Henry James. So far, so good. I am hoping for more excitement soon though.

As for sewing, I covered a new pillow. And I think I have everything to start quilting that purple quilt

Off to flirt with Henry James!

I Have Nothing To Write About

I haven't been a good blogger lately and I am feeling very guilty about it. I had convinced myself that because I didn't have any pictures to post and I haven't sewn much then there was nothing to write about. But of course, I am completely wrong. I can write about...

-the fabulous book I am currently reading... It is called Julie & Julia: 365 days, 524 recipes, 1 tiny apartment kitchen. It is about Julie, who is a married 29 year old secretary who lives in a "shit hole" apartment on Long Island and she decides that she is going to cook every recipe in Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child. This is the 1961 version too. While she does this she writes a blog about it. Which you can find here. I got it yesterday at the library and I am almost finished. It will be finished tonight because I have to start reading Priestesses by ... I cant remember but it is supposed to be great!

-My Partylite business... If anyone wants great candles email me. Or if you would like to know how to earn free candles email me!

-I have been cooking a lot more lately. Yesterday I made a terrific steak while learning the essentials of making the perfect marinade. This is what I came up with.

I marinated to beef steaks in:
Juice of one lemon
some ginger, salt, pepper, lemongrass, dried onion, and powdered garlic.

Coat each side of steak and cover in lemon juice. Marinate for 15-20 minutes.
Broil until done.

Then I made sweet potato fries. These were fantastic! I julienned the small sweet potatoes and fried them for about 10 minutes in vegetable oil. I dried them in paper towels covered in sugar and cinnamon. Then sprinkled more sugar and cinnamon. They were great.

See there are things to talk about!

Martha Is a Crafty Genius

Cowboy and I dropped Pumpkin off at Grandma's last night and went to our favorite relaxation spot, Barnes and Noble.
Which is where I came across Martha Stewart's Holiday Handmade Gifts Mag Special. It is FABULOUS!
Now I was never into Martha very much. I thought that she should have gotten off on the prison mess, all the men do. But after looking at this magazine I have decided that the women is a genius (where the hell have I been?). The stuff in here is so great! And its so simple to make.
I was looking at the Better Homes and Gardens Holiday Craft Magazine and I couldn't find one easy thing to make, or even something I wanted to make.
I was completely out of cash last night so after I cash my paycheck today I am going back to buy it.

Bringing In Beauty and Peace

The last couple of weeks have been very tight, money wise. I usually freak out when we get low on cash, I hoard every last penny, I eat very little (saving food), but this time I have been better. Today I woke up and I was overcome by anxiety and fear about money. I don't know if it was my dreams (which I don't remember) or maybe I just woke up on the anxiety side of the bed. However I have been reading The Celestine Prophecy and doing the workbook and today I used some of the strategies in the books to help get me out of my funk. It worked!

If you haven't read the Celestine Prophecy go to your bookstore right now and buy it. It is a wonderful, eye opening book. Today I was working on the 3rd Insight which focuses on the energy that connects all living things with the universe. It talks about how your thoughts are part of this energy and therefore you can affect your life by changing what you think about. The perfect example is my mom. She is a very negative person and I keep telling her that if she would only change her outlook that new opportunities would open up. I was talking to her on the phone today and the conversation was going fine until she started ranting about my stepfather and all of there problems. She never admits that any of these problems began because of her. I had to tune her out to deflect the negative energy that was pouring through the phone. I ended the conversation pretty quickly.

This morning I used this concept of absorbing energy from the universe and changing thoughts to improve my life. I have realized that I talk about being secure and wealthy as though it is far off in the future. What I need to project is that I am bringing in money now from different sources, this money is increasing and I need to take advantage of it. I am improving my life and I welcome more opportunities to improve my financial situation. That is a positive affirmation! I meditated on this concept for a few minutes. I was on my bed with the window open and the sun bathing me in its light. I absorbed the energy the sun gave me and I focused on my affirmation. I felt much more energized and positive after this.

The second thing I realized today is that my home and my life lacks the beauty I used to surround myself with. When I was younger my bedroom was a haven of books, artwork, statuettes, and the walls were painted a brilliant blue. I had trees right out my two large windows facing a view of the 1 acre property my parents owned. I loved my room and I spent most of my time there. Since I have been moving all over the place I have lost or damaged much of my belongings to the point that I don't have many beautiful things anymore. I have had a depression of sorts. I don't like most of the furniture in my apartment and there are only a couple small pieces of art on the walls.

So, today I made some small changes to make my bedroom more inviting and beautiful. I have a poster print of a Van Gogh painting that I like which I have been meaning to frame forever. Well today I thumb tacked it up on the wall. Not classy but better then nothing and it makes a difference. I also hung up a large scarf that has a really nice pattern on it. I have a throw that is brightly colored in blues and yellows which I covered my bed with.
I bought a bouquet of lovely yellow flowers (The ones on the left)and 2 more potted plants ($8.00 total) to bring more life into the house (plants have great healing energy). These things have definitely helped.

Look in your own home and see what small things you can do to make it more beautiful.

Revenge of a Middle Age Women Review

Since I am such an avid reader I am reviewing each book as I finish. I have been sick with a cold for the whole weekend so I was able to start and finish Revenge of the Middle Aged Women by Elizabeth Buchan.

This is about a women who is happily married to a good man then suddenly he decided that he has fallen in love with another women. He moves out and she is left to cope.

I think this would be a great book for any women going through a breakup. Rose, the main character, loses everything and still picks up the pieces of her life and moves on to become a better and happier person.
The beginning of the book was slow and there were other parts that were a little slow but overall I enjoyed this book and found it inspiring and entertaining.

Next on my list is Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes
